SUMMARY:Healing Hudson by Selva Ozelli for Putnam History Museum

SUMMARY:United Row's Race Across the Pacific
DESCRIPTION:Cheer on best friends\, Anna McLean & Jenny D’Anthony as they attempt a record breaking challenge to be the youngest and fastest female pair to row across the Pacific Ocean for The World’s Toughest Row. \nThey will leave on UN World Oceans Day\, Saturday\, June 8th 2024 from Monterey\, California and finish 2800 miles and approximately 60 days later at Hanalei Bay on the stunning island of Kaua’i\, Hawaii. \nAnna & Jenny met almost 10 years ago on the Clemson Rowing Team. Anna from the United Kingdom & Jenny from the United States known together as “United Row” \n“At Clemson we have alway been able to count on each other to pour their heart into every race whilst having a good time. \nWe’ve always had each others back\, both on and off the water. By fate or by luck we ended up living together in a small town in Arizona and from then on passion for adventure and challenge flourished. \nFinding ourselves doing spontaneous adventures.. summiting mountains on repeat\, cycling as far as our legs would take us all in ‘mostly’ high spirits and whacky 1/2 marathons… our friendship thrived when we both realized we always say “YES!” \nIt was an inevitable “Yes!” to our next adventure\, Rowing the Pacific. Standing united\, we are ready to conquer the pacific ocean together with your support.” \nJenny and Anna are advocates for the ocean and the environment and will be rowing through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. By rowing across the Pacific\, they want to awaken new depths of understanding\, compassion\, collaboration\, commitment\, and more. They are also rowing to help financially support Clemson’s women student-athletes. \nJenny is an open water ocean swimmer in Jacksonville\, Florida\, which connects her with Joni Roberts and Evolution University\, Friends of UN World Oceans Day and UN Global Goals Week Partner. \nHead to United Row’s website to find ways you can support fundraising efforts and follow Evolution University on social media for updates on their adventure. Find us with #EvolveOurWorld. \nUnited in Sport – United in Education – United in Leadership

SUMMARY:MOODY BLUE CRABS BY SELVA OZELLI FOR HAVRE DE GRACE MARITIME MUSEUM
DESCRIPTION:The Havre de Grace Maritime Museum\, Inc. is situated where the Susquehanna River meets the Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary in the US and a National Treasure. Its 64\,000-square-mile watershed encompasses one of the most economically significant regions of the United States. It is protected by the landmark Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement (adopted in 2014\, amended in 2020) that calls for\, among other things\, conservation and restoration of the treasured water\, sea\, and landscapes with participation from six states – New York\, (where I was born and I am from) Pennsylvania\, West Virginia\, Maryland\, Delaware\, Virginia\, and the District of Columbia. \nIn the 1970s\, the Chesapeake Bay was found to contain one of the planet’s first identified marine dead zones\, where waters were so depleted of oxygen that they were unable to support life\, resulting in massive fish kills. In 2010 the bay’s dead zones were estimated to kill 75\,000 tons of bottom-dwelling clams and worms each year\, weakening the base of the estuary’s food chain and robbing the blue crab in particular of a primary food source. \nThe blue crab is one of the more resilient Chesapeake Bay species\, but it faces constant challenges to survive: predators\, dead zones of low oxygen and other challenges. Blue crabs are sometimes observed to amass on shore to escape pockets of oxygen-poor water\, a behavior known as a “crab jubilee”. \n“I am launching my “Moody Blue Crab” series for Havre de Grace Maritime Museum on World Oceans Day 2024” said Selva Ozelli. \nMs. Ozelli is an ambassador to Oceanic Global and a member of Climate Heritage Network.

SUMMARY:Healing Hudson - Darter Fish of NY by Selva Ozelli for Putnam History Museum
DESCRIPTION:Darter fish are small\, slender freshwater fishes native to eastern North America. They live near the bottom of highly oxygenated clear streams with fast-flowing current\, darting quickly about when feeding or when disturbed. Their name comes from their swimming behavior\, moving from place to place on the bottom in sudden\, quick spurts. \nDarter fish have about 100 species. The tessellated darter – is found in the tidal Hudson River. The bluebreast darter is found in large streams of southwestern New York. \n“With my art show ‘Healing Hudson – Darter Fish of New York’ at the Putnam History\, I hope to draw attention to the nearly extinct Darter Fish and to the fact that action to restore wetlands and oceans is gathering momentum not only in the Hudson River Estuary\, but also around the world too” explained Selva Ozelli. \nMs. Ozelli is an ambassador to Oceanic Global and a member of Climate Heritage Network.

SUMMARY:I live by the Sea International Youth Photo and Film Contest
DESCRIPTION:The philosophy behind the I live by the Sea Contest is to create a platform which enables exchange of information for all people interested in the ocean. We strive to create an international society\, whose members believe in the need to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals\, with special emphasis on marine issues. We hope that our contest unites international youth who mutually learn about various aspects of marine environments\, from social to natural issues. \nWe think\, that the opportunity to contact people from various parts of the world is a great value in itself. Therefore\, taking part in the contest with a chance that his/her work will be presented in various world places\, during important events dedicated to the oceans\, we help to promote their own perception of the reality and their regions. We want the participants to share this vision with us. We want all of them to feel like we are helping to change the world for the better\, even just a little bit\, and thus the participation in this endeavor is an “award” in itself for all of us! \nWe always state that we all live by the sea. No matter how far from the sea you live\, next to the beach or far away in the mountains\, we still have a great impact on it. And it is up to us whether we create a positive relationship with the sea or have adverse impact on it. \nWe believe that educating people about the importance and the beauty of marine environments is the key to creating positive attitudes towards the sea. Therefore\, as every year\, we very much welcome also submissions which do not directly picture the sea or are made at the beach\, but present peoples’ thoughts regarding their relation to the sea in an artistic form from wherever they are. \nThis year\, the top photos together with information about top films and best stories will be presented in the Zoo Rostock\, Germany. You will be able to see the exhibition from July 10 for 3 weeks. \nOur Contest is an official partner of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. \nOn 20 May\, during the European Maritime Day in Ravenna 2022\, the Director General of DG MARE of the European Commission has awarded the I live by the Sea Contest with a: “Main EU4Ocean coalition award – Sky Blue” for significant achievement in bringing forward ocean literacy in Europe\, its efforts and initiatives in translating the spirit and principles of the EU4Ocean coalition\, while mobilizing diverse community. \nMore information:\nhttps://todaywehave.com/contest.html\nFeatured Image:\nOne of the winning photos by Aleksandra Stoińska\, age 15.
