SUMMARY:Tidal Shifts – Exploring the Ocean’s Wonder through Art\, Sound and Science
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the 2025 UN Ocean Conference\, TIDAL SHIFTS\, will be presented through a transdisciplinary collaboration of partners as an immersive audiovisual exhibition and symposium bridging ocean science\, sound\, art\, and community action to foster Ocean Literacy and public engagement. Inviting participants to explore the Ocean as a source of wonder\, intercultural dialogue\, and shared responsibility\, this initiative is co-created to support Challenge 10 of the UN Ocean Decade — restoring humanity’s relationship with the Ocean — and contributes to SDG 14 and the global goal to protect 30% of marine environments by 2030. This event will include various ocean and climate partners\, working together for the United Nations Ocean Decade through educational programs\, art and multi-sectoral collaborations. We welcome volunteers to join us at the Gallery space during the UNOC 3 Conference in Nice and help raise awareness about the inspiring artwork and events that will be hosted during this important week for the ocean. \nApply to join us as a volunteer in Nice at our gallery events here by May 31:\nhttps://bit.ly/Volunteer-UNOC-Tidal-Shifts

It is a unique chamber musical festival which invites artists alongside scientists to demonstrate how art and science together can contribute to build a beautiful world\, and invites the public to share the artistic experience as a reconciliation force in society and a step towards sustainability. \nThe theme for 2024 is the breath of the new world\, drawing inspiration from the warmth and vibrant colors of South American cultures\, while inviting everyone to awaken new depths and reflect on the vision we wish for our future world. \nStavanger’s history is linked to the North Sea and the preservation of the oceans and marine life will be addressed by several arrangements during the festival. \n\nArtistic workshop for kids (free) by artist Fauve Tintigner\, after Camille Stories by Professor Donna Haraway : “In a future around 2100\, science has allowed humans to hybridize\, to be as close as possible to the living beings that need protection. SUMMARY:I live by the Sea International Youth Photo and Film Contest
DESCRIPTION:The philosophy behind the I live by the Sea Contest is to create a platform which enables exchange of information for all people interested in the ocean. We strive to create an international society\, whose members believe in the need to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals\, with special emphasis on marine issues. We hope that our contest unites international youth who mutually learn about various aspects of marine environments\, from social to natural issues. \nWe think\, that the opportunity to contact people from various parts of the world is a great value in itself. Therefore\, taking part in the contest with a chance that his/her work will be presented in various world places\, during important events dedicated to the oceans\, we help to promote their own perception of the reality and their regions. We want the participants to share this vision with us. We want all of them to feel like we are helping to change the world for the better\, even just a little bit\, and thus the participation in this endeavor is an “award” in itself for all of us! \nWe always state that we all live by the sea. No matter how far from the sea you live\, next to the beach or far away in the mountains\, we still have a great impact on it. And it is up to us whether we create a positive relationship with the sea or have adverse impact on it. \nWe believe that educating people about the importance and the beauty of marine environments is the key to creating positive attitudes towards the sea. Therefore\, as every year\, we very much welcome also submissions which do not directly picture the sea or are made at the beach\, but present peoples’ thoughts regarding their relation to the sea in an artistic form from wherever they are. \nThis year\, the top photos together with information about top films and best stories will be presented in the Zoo Rostock\, Germany. You will be able to see the exhibition from July 10 for 3 weeks. \nOur Contest is an official partner of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. \nOn 20 May\, during the European Maritime Day in Ravenna 2022\, the Director General of DG MARE of the European Commission has awarded the I live by the Sea Contest with a: “Main EU4Ocean coalition award – Sky Blue” for significant achievement in bringing forward ocean literacy in Europe\, its efforts and initiatives in translating the spirit and principles of the EU4Ocean coalition\, while mobilizing diverse community. \nMore information:\nhttps://todaywehave.com/contest.html\nFeatured Image:\nOne of the winning photos by Aleksandra Stoińska\, age 15. SUMMARY:Cleaning up around a creek in Hilden\, Germany\, again
DESCRIPTION:It’s becoming a tradition to clean up around the Hoxbach in Hilden\, Germany\, a tributary of the River Rhine. On Saturday\, 15 June for World Ocean Weak\, a small group of inveterate ocean lovers invited by Mundus maris gathered in two groups to mob up cigarette butts\, plastic and other garbage from the vicinity of the creek. As the saying goes\, ocean protection starts at home. Equipped with gloves\, pincers and bags from the municipal garbage management agency and a shot of good will and determination\, the teams set off shortly after 2 pm. The good news: compared to previous years the teams found a lot less of the toxic cigarette butts. Coincidence or did previous information campaigns\, including by local newspapers\, and clean ups bear fruit? We would certainly like to believe to witness the beginning of some behavioural change.\nGathering again after about one and a half hours\, the harvest was still some 11 kg of trash\, numerically mostly diverse plastic wrappings\, but also a few bottles\, coke cups and even dypers. It was a good feeling to know all this could be properly disposed off. After this joint effort the team enjoyed well-deserved relaxation on the garden with coffee and home-made cake. A pleasant way to celebrate World Ocean week.

SUMMARY:World Ocean Day with the Kawabata Yasunari School in Hann\, Senegal
DESCRIPTION:The collaboration between Mundus maris and the Kawabata Yasunari School in Hann\, Senegal\, has become a tradition\, with the latest activity involving an educational excursion to the polluted beach in Hann Bay. On June 10\, 30 pupils\, accompanied by their director and two teachers\, visited the area where Dakar’s wastewaters are discharged. The hands-on experience aimed to educate the students\, most from affluent backgrounds\, about the environmental and health impacts of pollution. The excursion highlighted issues like plastic waste\, degraded plastic in the food web\, and sand mining. Back at school\, students documented their observations and discussed pollution causes\, consequences\, and solutions\, leading to a deeper understanding of local environmental challenges. The school plans to continue and expand this collaboration with Mundus maris\, advocating for regular activities\, educational materials\, and a leadership role in local environmental education initiatives. The teachers emphasized the importance of addressing marine pollution throughout the school year and involving other schools in Hann Bel Air in these efforts.

SUMMARY:World Ocean Day concert in Alcalá de Henares\, Spain
DESCRIPTION:Alcalá de Henares\, 30 km from Madrid and birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes\, originated from the Roman city of Complutum and now hosts 200\,000 inhabitants. The city’s renowned university\, founded in 1499\, became a key academic hub during Spain’s Golden Age\, attracting intellectuals like Antonio de Nebrija and San Ignacio de Loyola. The Plateresque-style Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso façade underscores Alcalá’s historical significance\, leading to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. On June 8\, 2024\, Mundus maris celebrated World Oceans Day in the university’s historic music hall\, featuring a musical program themed around water. The event commenced with a welcome address by a university representative\, followed by speeches from Patricia Morales and Marianne Braun of Mundus maris\, highlighting ecological and ethical concerns. Musicians\, including Olegario and Almudena Olayo Martínez\, performed pieces ranging from Handel’s “Water Music” to contemporary compositions by Anastasia Petrushevska. The event\, marked by a packed audience\, ended with wine\, tapas\, and the distribution of Mundus maris information\, creating an unforgettable evening that blended music with marine conservation awareness.

SUMMARY:Role Play in Cameroon
DESCRIPTION:Our long-term partners in Cameroon\, the Ocean Volunteers (Bénévoles Océan) led by Jeauberte Djamou\, have been organizing beach clean-ups in Kribi with various schools. This year\, Mundus maris provided a French version of the Role Play tested at a young marine researchers’ conference in Hamburg to support their celebrations. The role play aims to engage young adults in making a marine protected area work in a fictitious country\, emphasizing the perspectives of diverse stakeholders in protecting marine biodiversity and restoring ecosystems. Following the Global Biodiversity Framework\, which calls for marine protected areas in 30% of the ocean\, the role play’s characters were developed from expert interviews and literature research. On World Ocean Day\, June 8\, 2024\, in Yaoundé\, the Ocean Volunteers hosted a modified role play focused on marine biodiversity protection. Ten participants represented various stakeholders in the Manyange na Elombo-Campo marine protected area\, proposing management solutions. The moderator facilitated discussions among a local mayor\, MPA director\, resident\, artisanal fisherman\, trawler captain\, natural scientist\, tourism company representative\, water treatment plant manager\, NGO leader\, and concluded with a forest and environment expert’s debriefing.

SUMMARY:Mundus maris celebrates World Ocean Day 2024 with Ocean Summit in Kiel\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Kiel\, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein\, Germany\, is dedicated to becoming a leader in ocean protection on the Baltic Sea. Mundus maris has collaborated with various organizations through the ‘Ocean Summit’ to address marine protection\, focusing on rehabilitating the severely affected Baltic. Issues such as overfishing\, pollution from agricultural runoff and WWII weapons\, and warming waters are critical concerns. A combination of science\, arts\, education\, citizen involvement\, government policy\, and private sector engagement aims to move from diagnosing problems to rehabilitation. On World Ocean Day 2024\, activities like the Ocean Game\, promoting marine knowledge and conservation actions\, were popular. The FishBase Guide app and fish rulers for commercial species were also well-received. The event\, marked by high attendance and media coverage\, featured partners of the Ocean Summit presenting their initiatives. Cornelia Nauen of Mundus maris emphasized the importance of connecting global biodiversity and climate agreements to local actions in the Baltic. The event successfully combined serious environmental concerns with festive activities\, resulting in high public engagement. Despite a brief rain interruption\, the evening concluded with a concert\, making it a successful and well-received World Ocean Day in Kiel.
