SUMMARY:World Ocean Day with the Kawabata Yasunari School in Hann\, Senegal
DESCRIPTION:The collaboration between Mundus maris and the Kawabata Yasunari School in Hann\, Senegal\, has become a tradition\, with the latest activity involving an educational excursion to the polluted beach in Hann Bay. On June 10\, 30 pupils\, accompanied by their director and two teachers\, visited the area where Dakar’s wastewaters are discharged. The hands-on experience aimed to educate the students\, most from affluent backgrounds\, about the environmental and health impacts of pollution. The excursion highlighted issues like plastic waste\, degraded plastic in the food web\, and sand mining. Back at school\, students documented their observations and discussed pollution causes\, consequences\, and solutions\, leading to a deeper understanding of local environmental challenges. The school plans to continue and expand this collaboration with Mundus maris\, advocating for regular activities\, educational materials\, and a leadership role in local environmental education initiatives. The teachers emphasized the importance of addressing marine pollution throughout the school year and involving other schools in Hann Bel Air in these efforts.

SUMMARY:World Ocean Day concert in Alcalá de Henares\, Spain
DESCRIPTION:Alcalá de Henares\, 30 km from Madrid and birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes\, originated from the Roman city of Complutum and now hosts 200\,000 inhabitants. The city’s renowned university\, founded in 1499\, became a key academic hub during Spain’s Golden Age\, attracting intellectuals like Antonio de Nebrija and San Ignacio de Loyola. The Plateresque-style Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso façade underscores Alcalá’s historical significance\, leading to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. On June 8\, 2024\, Mundus maris celebrated World Oceans Day in the university’s historic music hall\, featuring a musical program themed around water. The event commenced with a welcome address by a university representative\, followed by speeches from Patricia Morales and Marianne Braun of Mundus maris\, highlighting ecological and ethical concerns. Musicians\, including Olegario and Almudena Olayo Martínez\, performed pieces ranging from Handel’s “Water Music” to contemporary compositions by Anastasia Petrushevska. The event\, marked by a packed audience\, ended with wine\, tapas\, and the distribution of Mundus maris information\, creating an unforgettable evening that blended music with marine conservation awareness.

SUMMARY:Role Play in Cameroon
DESCRIPTION:Our long-term partners in Cameroon\, the Ocean Volunteers (Bénévoles Océan) led by Jeauberte Djamou\, have been organizing beach clean-ups in Kribi with various schools. This year\, Mundus maris provided a French version of the Role Play tested at a young marine researchers’ conference in Hamburg to support their celebrations. The role play aims to engage young adults in making a marine protected area work in a fictitious country\, emphasizing the perspectives of diverse stakeholders in protecting marine biodiversity and restoring ecosystems. Following the Global Biodiversity Framework\, which calls for marine protected areas in 30% of the ocean\, the role play’s characters were developed from expert interviews and literature research. On World Ocean Day\, June 8\, 2024\, in Yaoundé\, the Ocean Volunteers hosted a modified role play focused on marine biodiversity protection. Ten participants represented various stakeholders in the Manyange na Elombo-Campo marine protected area\, proposing management solutions. The moderator facilitated discussions among a local mayor\, MPA director\, resident\, artisanal fisherman\, trawler captain\, natural scientist\, tourism company representative\, water treatment plant manager\, NGO leader\, and concluded with a forest and environment expert’s debriefing.

SUMMARY:Mundus maris celebrates World Ocean Day 2024 with Ocean Summit in Kiel\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Kiel\, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein\, Germany\, is dedicated to becoming a leader in ocean protection on the Baltic Sea. Mundus maris has collaborated with various organizations through the ‘Ocean Summit’ to address marine protection\, focusing on rehabilitating the severely affected Baltic. Issues such as overfishing\, pollution from agricultural runoff and WWII weapons\, and warming waters are critical concerns. A combination of science\, arts\, education\, citizen involvement\, government policy\, and private sector engagement aims to move from diagnosing problems to rehabilitation. On World Ocean Day 2024\, activities like the Ocean Game\, promoting marine knowledge and conservation actions\, were popular. The FishBase Guide app and fish rulers for commercial species were also well-received. The event\, marked by high attendance and media coverage\, featured partners of the Ocean Summit presenting their initiatives. Cornelia Nauen of Mundus maris emphasized the importance of connecting global biodiversity and climate agreements to local actions in the Baltic. The event successfully combined serious environmental concerns with festive activities\, resulting in high public engagement. Despite a brief rain interruption\, the evening concluded with a concert\, making it a successful and well-received World Ocean Day in Kiel.

SUMMARY:Presentación del libro: Un Mar de Esperanza - Soluciones ciudadanas para un planeta sostenible.
DESCRIPTION:En el marco del Día Mundial de los Océanos\, el Colegio de la Frontera Sur (ECOSUR) en colaboración con el Ayuntamiento Municipal de Cozumel a través de la Biblioteca Municipal Gonzalo Jesús Rosado Iturralde\, el Parque nacional Arrecifes de Cozumel de la Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (CONANP)\, y Comunidad y Biodiversidad A.C.

She works with volunteer citizen scientists to determine sand lance and surf smelt spawning presence at local beaches\, information which was previously undocumented. This information is then submitted to a central database for public information. \nWe will also discuss the importance of these fishes to all of us\, and their connection to eelgrass and orcas. \nWear your gumboots.
