SUMMARY:Fujisawa Beach Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:The SEGO Initiative’s Fujisawa Beach Cleaning Project\, established in 2009\, is a large-scale beach clean-up that aims to protect marine ecosystems and foster environmental awareness. Held twice a year along the Enoshima coast\, the event promotes solidarity between local and international communities to remove ocean debris while promoting sustainability through its messages and actions. Like all our cleanups\, the event on June 1st includes citizen science activities as a way to catalyze action for our ocean and climate.

SUMMARY:World Rowing – WWF Healthy Waters Alliance: Norway Clean-Up Week & Marine Restoration
DESCRIPTION:The World Rowing – WWF Healthy Waters Alliance is supporting an ambitious two-phase project to inspire action and raise awareness across Norway’s and the global rowing\ncommunity. Spearheaded by Olympian and World Rowing Healthy Waters Alliance Ambassador Martin Helseth\, the project aims to mobilise Rowing clubs along the Oslo\nFjord for large-scale clean-up and marine restoration efforts. \nThe initiative highlights the power of sport in protecting & restoring nature through tackling pollution in their waterways. \nTwo Key Phases to Create Lasting Change: \n• Phase 1: Clean-Up Week (3–8 June 2025)\nCoinciding with World Ocean Day (8th June)\, local Norwegian Rowing clubs around Oslo and underwater divers from the Norwegian National Diving Federation will come together for underwater seabed clean-up dives\, onshore clean-up efforts\,\nenvironmental education\, and sustainability advocacy. This week of action will target pollution hotspots in and around the Oslo Fjord and empower clubs to sustain future clean-up efforts and will culminate in a seabed clean-up dive at the Christiania Rowing Club on the 8th of June\, where media representatives are invited to attend the event. \n• Phase 2: Oslo Fjord Restoration Day (23 August 2025)\nFeaturing a fun day of youth engagement and education around habitat restoration led by local NGO Marea and Martin Helseth\, this day will be a milestone in long-term marine protection efforts in the Oslo Fjord. \nA Movement Led by a Champion: As a World Rowing Healthy Waters Ambassador\, Martin Helseth brings both athletic excellence and passionate environmental advocacy to the forefront. Through his leadership\, the initiative is setting a global example for how athletes and clubs can protect their freshwater and coastal ecosystems they depend on. \n“This isn’t just about cleaning up—it’s about creating a movement of new generation nature protectors in our sport\,” says Helseth. “We are showing that small actions at the club level\ncan ripple outward to global change.”

SUMMARY:Sea Change: Advancing a Strong UN Plastics Treaty
DESCRIPTION:Healthy oceans are critical to life on Earth\, providing vast psychological and social benefits in addition to sustaining physical life. But the oceans are facing a crisis—harmed by emissions from fossil fuel extraction and plastic production and widespread pollution at sea. Each year\, 11 million metric tons of plastics enter the oceans\, with an estimated 170 trillion microplastics now circulating within them. Half of all sea turtles have likely ingested plastic\, and by 2050\, nearly all seabirds may too.\nIn honor of World Oceans Day in June\, Plastic Pollution Coalition will host a timely conversation with leading scientists\, advocates\, and policy experts on the path to a strong United Nations Global Plastics Treaty\, with a special focus on how the treaty may affect the world’s oceans. With the next negotiating round set for August in Geneva\, Switzerland\, and just ahead of the UN Ocean Conference\, this webinar will explore what’s at stake in the treaty negotiations\, the barriers to progress\, and what world leaders must do to protect the oceans from plastics and other harms.\nJoining the discussion will be: Christopher Chin\, Founder and Executive Director\, COARE; Graham Forbes\, Global Plastics Campaign Lead\, Greenpeace; and Marce Gutiérrez-Graudiņš\, Founder and Executive Director\, Azul. The webinar will be moderated by Kathryn Nelson\, Plastic Free Mermaid.

SUMMARY:Queering the Ocean
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, June 8\, for an evening at Ocean Space in celebration of World Ocean Day. The event will feature talks\, a drag show\, and a DJ set\, all dedicated to the Ocean and ecology from an intersectional and queer perspective.\nQueer ecology highlights the complexity and fluidity found in nature—both in human bodies and ecosystems. By acknowledging the diversity and interdependence of all living beings\, we can discover new ways to understand nature and recognize the human species as an integral part of it.\nWe will explore the challenges and opportunities of our time through an eco-transfeminist lens\, creating space for narratives that address the intersection of environmental justice\, gender rights\, and the intricate complexities of our existence.\nIt is impossible to discuss environmental sustainability without considering cultural\, social\, and emotional aspects. When we talk about the Ocean\, we also talk about bodies that are moving\, hybrid\, fluid\, and queer.\nPROGRAM\n6 – 6:45pm | Enacting ocean science and blue economy otherwise through decolonial and feminist artistic praxis\nPanel talk con Louise Carver\, Esther Figueroa e Antonia Majaca Friedman (in English).\n6:45 – 7:30pm | Intertidal Practices\, Research\, Performance\, and Archive\nConversation with PerLa – Performance Epistemologies Research Lab\, in collabortion with IUAV University (in Italian).\n7:45 – 8:15pm | Abyssal Sparkles for Other Futures\nDrag show with Laryssa Coifashi\, IINU e La Fede Vera\, in collaboration with Collettivo Isteria.\n8:15 – 10pm | Dj set with Condoii in collaboration with Threees Productions
