DESCRIPTION:From June 3 to June 8\, 2024\, Mundus maris asbl\, in collaboration with Aquaworld\, celebrated World Ocean Day in Akure\, Ondo State\, Nigeria\, with the theme “Awaken the New Depth.” This event aimed to raise awareness about ocean conservation\, featuring participation from The Millennium Group of Schools for the first time. The program included educational lectures by Dr. Israel Oke and Mr. Oladele Timothy T. from the Federal University of Technology\, Akure (FUTA)\, covering ocean uniqueness and benefits to humanity. Activities such as an ocean-themed quiz\, drawing\, and painting engaged students\, highlighting the impact of human activities on the ocean. Dr. Adeleke Mosunmola Lydia led a site visit to an area known for plastic pollution\, emphasizing the 4’R approach (Refuse\, Reduce\, Reuse\, and Recycle). The event also included the distribution of 90 Pupils Workbooks and 3 Teaching Manuals on the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries. Participation reached 150 attendees\, surpassing the registered 100 students. The celebration concluded with a group photo and a call to continue advocating for ocean conservation.

DESCRIPTION:Cheer on best friends\, Anna McLean & Jenny D’Anthony as they attempt a record breaking challenge to be the youngest and fastest female pair to row across the Pacific Ocean for The World’s Toughest Row. \nThey will leave on UN World Oceans Day\, Saturday\, June 8th 2024 from Monterey\, California and finish 2800 miles and approximately 60 days later at Hanalei Bay on the stunning island of Kaua’i\, Hawaii. \nAnna & Jenny met almost 10 years ago on the Clemson Rowing Team. Anna from the United Kingdom & Jenny from the United States known together as “United Row” \n“At Clemson we have alway been able to count on each other to pour their heart into every race whilst having a good time. \nWe’ve always had each others back\, both on and off the water. By fate or by luck we ended up living together in a small town in Arizona and from then on passion for adventure and challenge flourished. \nFinding ourselves doing spontaneous adventures.. summiting mountains on repeat\, cycling as far as our legs would take us all in ‘mostly’ high spirits and whacky 1/2 marathons… our friendship thrived when we both realized we always say “YES!” \nIt was an inevitable “Yes!” to our next adventure\, Rowing the Pacific. Standing united\, we are ready to conquer the pacific ocean together with your support.” \nJenny and Anna are advocates for the ocean and the environment and will be rowing through the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Mundus maris has collaborated with various organizations through the ‘Ocean Summit’ to address marine protection\, focusing on rehabilitating the severely affected Baltic. Issues such as overfishing\, pollution from agricultural runoff and WWII weapons\, and warming waters are critical concerns. A combination of science\, arts\, education\, citizen involvement\, government policy\, and private sector engagement aims to move from diagnosing problems to rehabilitation. On World Ocean Day 2024\, activities like the Ocean Game\, promoting marine knowledge and conservation actions\, were popular. The FishBase Guide app and fish rulers for commercial species were also well-received. The event\, marked by high attendance and media coverage\, featured partners of the Ocean Summit presenting their initiatives. Cornelia Nauen of Mundus maris emphasized the importance of connecting global biodiversity and climate agreements to local actions in the Baltic. The event successfully combined serious environmental concerns with festive activities\, resulting in high public engagement. Despite a brief rain interruption\, the evening concluded with a concert\, making it a successful and well-received World Ocean Day in Kiel.

DESCRIPTION:Our long-term partners in Cameroon\, the Ocean Volunteers (Bénévoles Océan) led by Jeauberte Djamou\, have been organizing beach clean-ups in Kribi with various schools. This year\, Mundus maris provided a French version of the Role Play tested at a young marine researchers’ conference in Hamburg to support their celebrations. The role play aims to engage young adults in making a marine protected area work in a fictitious country\, emphasizing the perspectives of diverse stakeholders in protecting marine biodiversity and restoring ecosystems. Following the Global Biodiversity Framework\, which calls for marine protected areas in 30% of the ocean\, the role play’s characters were developed from expert interviews and literature research. On World Ocean Day\, June 8\, 2024\, in Yaoundé\, the Ocean Volunteers hosted a modified role play focused on marine biodiversity protection. Ten participants represented various stakeholders in the Manyange na Elombo-Campo marine protected area\, proposing management solutions. The moderator facilitated discussions among a local mayor\, MPA director\, resident\, artisanal fisherman\, trawler captain\, natural scientist\, tourism company representative\, water treatment plant manager\, NGO leader\, and concluded with a forest and environment expert’s debriefing.

Fatoyinbo emphasized mangrove forest conservation to mitigate climate change\, while Ogundimu focused on tackling marine plastic pollution through reduced production and improved waste management. The seminar underscored the urgency of protecting oceans for climate stability\, advocating for continued collaboration\, education\, and advocacy. Prof. Stella Williams presented the first prize to Edewho\, and Dr. Ayojesutomi Abiodun-Solanke closed the event\, thanking attendees and urging further action. The seminar\, attended by over 50 participants\, fostered dialogue and contributed to the global ocean and climate action movement.

The hands-on experience aimed to educate the students\, most from affluent backgrounds\, about the environmental and health impacts of pollution. The excursion highlighted issues like plastic waste\, degraded plastic in the food web\, and sand mining. Back at school\, students documented their observations and discussed pollution causes\, consequences\, and solutions\, leading to a deeper understanding of local environmental challenges. The school plans to continue and expand this collaboration with Mundus maris\, advocating for regular activities\, educational materials\, and a leadership role in local environmental education initiatives. The teachers emphasized the importance of addressing marine pollution throughout the school year and involving other schools in Hann Bel Air in these efforts.

SUMMARY:Cleaning up around a creek in Hilden\, Germany\, again
DESCRIPTION:It’s becoming a tradition to clean up around the Hoxbach in Hilden\, Germany\, a tributary of the River Rhine. On Saturday\, 15 June for World Ocean Weak\, a small group of inveterate ocean lovers invited by Mundus maris gathered in two groups to mob up cigarette butts\, plastic and other garbage from the vicinity of the creek. As the saying goes\, ocean protection starts at home. Equipped with gloves\, pincers and bags from the municipal garbage management agency and a shot of good will and determination\, the teams set off shortly after 2 pm. The good news: compared to previous years the teams found a lot less of the toxic cigarette butts. Coincidence or did previous information campaigns\, including by local newspapers\, and clean ups bear fruit? We would certainly like to believe to witness the beginning of some behavioural change.\nGathering again after about one and a half hours\, the harvest was still some 11 kg of trash\, numerically mostly diverse plastic wrappings\, but also a few bottles\, coke cups and even dypers. It was a good feeling to know all this could be properly disposed off. After this joint effort the team enjoyed well-deserved relaxation on the garden with coffee and home-made cake. A pleasant way to celebrate World Ocean week.
