ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR CONSERVATION OF PELAGIC SHARKS: MAKO Shark- ID

June 11 2020 @ 11:00 AM - 12:00 AM

Global populations of pelagic sharks have been reduced exponentially with several species now facing extinction. While some measures have been taken with the purpose of protecting them, their elusiveness, high mobility, and lack of data have made pelagic sharks conservation quite a difficult task.

Since 2017, Fundación México Azul, alongside our partners Cabo Shark Dive, has been working with the local population of pelagic sharks in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico, using the tourist operation as research platform.

Shortfin mako sharks (Isurus oxyrinchus) are not only a poorly studied, highly migratory species, and one of the most fished shark species worldwide but also highly vulnerable and classified as endangered by the IUCN. For this reason, it is extremely important to gather scientific information about its population dynamics.

Together with a team of engineering and computer science students from La Salle University (Mexico City), and through the sponsorship of Microsoft’s AI for Earth program, we aim to create an open-source software that will photo-identify individual shortfin mako sharks in the Mexican Pacific Ocean by using AI and machine learning technologies.  Thanks to this software, we will be able to understand a little bit more about this iconic and enigmatic species.

Hosted by Marine Biologist Clara Calatayud.
