International Conference “Underwater Cultural Heritage in Europe Today,” Zadar, Croatia, 25 – 26 October 2018

October 25 2018 @ 9:00 AM - October 26 2018 @ 6:00 PM

On the occasion of the European Year of Cultural Heritage the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology (ICUA) in Zadar, a Category II Centre operating under UNESCO auspices, is hosting a Conference to foster dialogue, exchange experiences and ideas and present new achievements in the protection and preservation of underwater cultural heritage. The Croatian Ministry of Culture financially supports the event.

The main objectives of the European Year of Cultural Heritage which fit the concept of this conference are:

  • to promote sustainable cultural tourism,
  • to develop objective standards for interventions in historic environments and heritage sites,
  • to fight against illicit trafficking of cultural assets, and
  • to manage the threats to which cultural heritage is exposed.

The International Centre for Underwater Archaeology will organise a two-day expert conference. Its focus will be on underwater cultural heritage and the diving tourism in historic areas. Ten speakers and twenty archaeologists, historians, professional divers from the EU and Eastern Europe are expected.

The international conference will be devoted to the issues of the implementation of the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Heritage in the EU countries and other European countries.

Gathering the experiences and opinions of Member States and observers is important to determine how pre-existing international law can be enhanced by the Convention to increase the protection of UCH. Representatives of the ministries of culture of ten EU countries are expected to attend this conference. The aim of the conference is to identify key current issues and challenges and to explore how these issues can be addressed and encourage people to explore Europe’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
