Underwater Cultural Heritage - Regional Meeting and Training, Campeche, Mexico

November 12 2018 @ 9:00 AM - November 13 2018 @ 6:00 PM

The UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage aims to help States to better protect their submerged cultural heritage. This is done through regional workshops, capacity building activities, awareness raising and trainings around the world.

A first step in enhancing protection of underwater cultural heritage is to ratify the 2001 Convention. To enable States to do so, to increase ratification numbers, and to help countries implement the Convention, UNESCO organizes in autumn 2018 a regional Meeting in Campeche, Mexico.

The meeting will be accompanied by a Regional Training on the Research, Management and Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage in the Latin American and Caribbean region in order to increase capacities of Member States to implement the 2001 UNESCO Convention and to research and protect the underwater cultural heritage in the Latin American and Caribbean Region.

A majority of States from the Latin-American and Caribbean region has already ratified the UNESCO 2001 Convention. Becoming a party to the Convention gives States access to international cooperation in underwater archaeology and brings the application of best international standards of protection and research to their archaeological sites under water.  It will also promote the training of archaeologists in the field of underwater heritage and raise public awareness.
