June 05 2017 @ 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

UNESCO organizes Event “An Ocean without History?” on the importance of underwater cultural heritage at the SDG 14 Oceans Conference at UN Headquarters

The event will take place on Monday, 5 June 2017 at United Nations Headquarters in New York (USA). The Delegation of Honduras in cooperation with UNESCO will host the meeting. It will focus on underwater cultural heritage and its contribution to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 14, which concentrates on the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas and marine resources.

The UNESCO event promotes the incorporation of underwater cultural heritage in the global work of oceans and sustainability efforts. Speakers include reputed experts, such as Dr. James Delgado, Senior Vice President of Search Inc. (USA) and archaeologist specialized in underwater archaeology, as well as Dr. Jon C. Henderson, prehistoric archeologist and Professor at the Underwater Archaeology Research Centre at Nottingham University (UK).

The event will be opened by Alejandro Palma Cerna, Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Honduras to the United Nations, and Ulrike Guerin, of the Secretariat of the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.

Underwater cultural heritage encompasses a vast legacy of traces of human existence. Research on the subject is an important part of oceanographic scientific research, notably also because it can contribute to understanding climate change and the rise of the sea level. Protecting this heritage from pillage, commercial exploitation, trawling damage, construction and climate change is essential in order to secure a beneficial use of the ocean.

Investing in the protection and research of underwater cultural heritage is critical in allowing for a socio-historic understanding of the oceans. The importance of this issue has been recognized by a series of UN resolutions.
