WOD at the Extreme Northern Corner of the Mediterranean Sea

mai 30 2019 @ 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Our event is aimed at learning the principles of Ocean Literacy by means of a fieldwork activity on the small beach of a Natura 2000 protected area (coastal wetland) at the extreme Northern corner of the Mediterranean Sea.

A group of 7th grade students will make observations on natural and man-made features, discovering landscape evolution in the last century in an area affected by remediation and then returning to wilderness.

Students will analyze water from a barrier-spring river and from the sea, drawing conclusions about the hydrology of the area and pollution from agriculture and human settlements.

At the end of the activity students will be questioned about "the ocean's influence on them and their influence on the ocean" eliciting their proposals for a sustainable use of land and sea.

Harnessing the Power of People to Fight Ocean Trash

The International Coastal Cleanup began more than 30 years ago, when communities rallied together with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering their coastline. The movement was catalyzed by the passion and spirit of two committed individuals. Back in 1986, Linda Maraniss moved to Texas from Washington, DC, where she had been working for Ocean Conservancy.
