Peace Boat visits Ponta Delgada, Portugal, to celebrate World Oceans Day

mai 31 2019 @ 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM

On May 31, Peace Boat’s Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors will visit Ponta Delgada, in the Azores Islands, an archipelago in the mid-Atlantic. They will be welcomed by professors, researchers and students of the University of Azores specialising in marine biology, marine botany, and ecology. Meeting onboard Peace Boat’s ship, there will be an opportunity for the youth to exchange experiences and discuss with local students the impact of climate change on the Azores islands and their own islands. After the event, accompanied by the professors and researchers, the group will visit different locations on Ponta Delgada, impacted by the environmental crisis and look at local solutions. After this event, the group will embark onboard Peace Boat until New York, where they will join World Oceans Day celebrations.

Harnessing the Power of People to Fight Ocean Trash

The International Coastal Cleanup began more than 30 years ago, when communities rallied together with the common goal of collecting and documenting the trash littering their coastline. The movement was catalyzed by the passion and spirit of two committed individuals. Back in 1986, Linda Maraniss moved to Texas from Washington, DC, where she had been working for Ocean Conservancy.
