How much is a sardine worth?

Junio 08 2018 @ 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

"How much is a sardine worth?" - How much is a sardine worth, since it is captured at sea until it arrives at our plate? The question was asked to students of Ciência Viva School on World Oceans Day. Francisco Andrade, a researcher at MARE, came to Pavilion of Knowledge – Ciência Viva to talk about the business chain of this species that is so consumed in the summer. The ocean, however, has zero profit with the fishery ... So how to balance it? Here are some of the students' proposals: to collect a piece of garbage from the sea for every pound of sardines caught, to replace the sardines with another more sustainable fish, to increase the price of sardines and to drastically reduce the consumption of plastic.
