Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors Programme 2019

mai 24 2019 @ 10:00 AM - juin 08 2019 @ 6:00 PM

To celebrate World Oceans Day, Peace Boat is organizing the third edition of the Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors Programme from May 24 to June 8, 2019. Young leaders from the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, and Caribbean who are active on issues related to climate change and ocean degradation will travel from Valletta (Malta) to New York (United States) with stops and activities in Motril and Granada (Spain), Tangiers (Morocco) and Ponta Delgada (Portugal). The group will board in Malta which organized the Our Conference in 2017. They also will visit Morocco which hosted COP22 in 2016. The programme will conclude in New York where Peace Boat’s vessel will dock in Manhattan during World Oceans Day and activities will be organized in collaboration with United Nations partners as part of the official UN programme for World Oceans Day.

This programme highlights the stories and experiences of young people at the forefront of injustices brought about by climate change, amplifying their voices calling for action. Press conferences, public events, and meetings with government representatives will be organized in the different countries that the youth will visit with Peace Boat.

This programme was first held in 2017, launched at the United Nations Ocean Conference and recognised by the COP23 Presidency Secretariat as an Endorsed Event of COP23. A second edition was held in 2018 which concluded at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the UN. The programme brings youth leaders from states on the front line of climate change and marine degradation to travel onboard Peace Boat's ship, engaging in capacity building and bringing their message to citizens and government representatives through the voyage. It aims to highlight SDG13 (Climate Action) and SDG14 (Life Below Water) as part of Peace Boat’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and a partner to the UN SDG Action Campaign.
