Ocean Literacy

Most of us live our lives blissfully unaware of how our day-to-day actions impact on the health of the
ocean, or how the health of the ocean impacts on our own daily lives. Ocean literacy is defined as ‘an understanding of the ocean’s influence on you and your influence on the ocean’.

World Oceans Day is an opportunity for ocean research institutions, governments and NGOs around the world to strengthen public engagement and build greater ocean literacy so we can all have a greater understanding of what we can do to protect the health of our ocean.

Whether you are a scientist, an educator, or simply an interested member of your community, this portal gives you access to educational and multimedia resources to help inform and build greater levels of ocean literacy in your community.

Our goal is to help people understand the importance of the ocean to humankind and the connection between human and ocean health.

As an “ocean literate” citizen, you will be able to communicate about the ocean in a meaningful way and make informed decisions about how to interact with the ocean and its resources.
