A new era of managing and sustainably using the oceans for sustainable development 2030

The ocean is the largest biosphere on the planet and is home to 80% of life on Earth.

Seeing the ocean in its true depth and complexity is exactly what is needed in a world of accelerating climate change and population demands if we are to hope to reduce or halt the risks of massive damage to marine resources, conserve the world’s fisheries, conserve the ocean, and protect marine biodiversity.

The oceans are the planet’s climate engine, absorbing 25 percent of carbon dioxide emissions, absorbing about 90 percent of the additional heat from those emissions, and generating about 50 percent of the oxygen we breathe.

As we enter the United Nations Decade of Oceanography for Sustainable Development and perhaps the era of true ocean governance, we can do just that, and change events.
