Small scale and artisanal fisheries provide livelihoods part-or-full time for 60 million people globally, 40% of whom are women. According to new data assembled by an international research project, they generate some $77billion annually from the sale of their catch. However, small scale fishers (SSFs) are facing a variety of major challenges: among them, climate change affecting fish locations, over-exploitation of fishing stocks, and Covid lockdowns closing down restaurant markets.

In this challenging environment, how have tech and fintech solutions helped to assist the precarious livelihoods of SSFs? How might they help in the future? This Expedition session will explore current solutions being deployed in parts of Africa and the world with the aim of encouraging the next generation of innovations in this space.
