Year of the Salish Sea

Date

8 June

Location

Vancouver, BC

June 8, 2022 is the first day of the Year of the Salish Sea (YOSS), a youth-led initiative based on the unceded, ancestral territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ Nations, or Vancouver, BC, Canada.

YOSS aims to bring together local First Nations, municipalities, organizations, and individuals in the Salish Sea ecosystem region from June 2022-2023. YOSS will amplify existing stewardship efforts, engage the public with issues related to the Salish Sea and its watersheds, and ultimately push for meaningful policy change to improve its health and management.

Salish Sea-related advocacy, outreach, educational, and activity-based events will be taking place all year round. However, the first event of the Year is on World Oceans Day. It is taking place in the City of Vancouver at Creekside Community Recreation Centre from 7-10pm PST and is being hosted by Swim Drink Fish, who will present the findings of their recent water monitoring report at the community celebration event.
