Postponed due to COVID, BBNJ Intergovernmental Conference now scheduled for August 2021

The General Assembly of the United Nations has requested that the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Conference on an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ Intergovernmental Conference), be convened from 16 to 27 August 2021. The fourth session, the last to one to be initially decided on by the General Assembly when it convened the Intergovernmental Conference in December of 2017. The session was originally schedule to take place 23 March to 3 April 2020, was postponed due to the the situation concerning the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
